Picture 748Curly kale is one of the oldest brassicas and is generally grown in the UK from June until March, although it is most plentiful from October onwards. The majority of kale produced in this country is grown by farmers in Lincolnshire. The vegetable we know today is more than 2,000 years old and several varieties were developed by the Romans. In fact, until the end of the Middle Ages, kale was one of the most common green vegetables eaten across Europe.

As well as looking attractive on the plate, with its deep green colour, kale is incredibly nutritious and an excellent choice for those wanting to enjoy a healthy balanced diet. Kale is a great source of vitamins A, C and K as well as containing helpful amounts of manganese, copper, calcium and folate. Gram for gram, kale contains 17 times more vitamin C than the carrot!

Only the leaves are used in cooking and are delicious boiled, steamed, baked or sautéed in butter. This hearty vegetable also makes a great addition to casseroles, omelettes, soups or warm salads. Why not simply deep-fry some kale for 30 seconds and season well for a great looking and tasty accompaniment?
